I am basically on a mission to resolve the conflicts between parents and children to bring them closer and create a happy family environment.
Prakriti Prasad, senior journalist, author and parenting coach
I have seen people who are focused and and dedicated to a cause , somehow ,knowing Prakriti Prasad as a parenting coach gave me an insight into the deeper meaning of commitment towards a purpose. While having a conversation with her about her noble mission of bringing about a healthy parent - child ecosystem, I realised that she has taken a pledge to pursue her passion of perfecting the process of parenting. Well, let’s call it an experience or a journey— selfless, sublime and solicitous one.
Studies are being performed and research conducted by experts , these reveal that parents have developed certain behavioral expressions, like , getting too inquisitive about all that quite a grown up child is doing. Psychologists call it too much parental engagement. According to a Stanford led research, active participation of both parents and their child must be of the texture of soulful interaction, like, watching a good series and knowing each other’s opinion about it or discussing the plot . Grown up kids or teens do not take over-involvement as care, instead they put it under the category of mistrust.
Parents today often look for teachable moments but they fail to identify , what a child needs from a parent, not teachings, but empathy, love and interesting talks. Quality parenting helps children grow their cognitive and emotional skills.
Prakriti has authored Parenteen and this book talks at all levels of emotional intelligence. She lays emphasis on compassion, care and communication
“start your day with a hug and make your child feel truly loved,” she feels that this is the best way to convey love to your child.
Her words work as a healing balm, soothing the wounds, parents and children often get in the course of growing up. Both the parents and the children need to grow, evolve and redefine their understanding of love. It is not easy and there is no quick tip to it. It can only come by a regular interaction and that too , not atypical one , that comes with yelling, instructing or judging. She is strictly against QUICK TIPS for fixing delicate matters associated with the most divine bond that exists on this planet.
“All communication channels are drying up”, Prakriti remarks , when talking about the usual problem that comes in most of the parent child relationships.
Here’s an excerpt from the interview
Q. So you are on a mission to bring back happiness to every parent child relationship . Right ?
Yes, that’s what I am focused on and have invested all my energy to. I want to resolve the conflicts between parents and children to bring them closer . As a mother and as a parenting coach, I feel that this needs to be addressed.
Q Your book Parenteen is an ultimate guide to parenting
Yes, it is a handbook for parents to help them connect with their children
Q. There’s a query from Mrs vandana Goel, a pathologist based out in varanasi and a mother of a 15 year old boy. She asks that what is she supposed to do when her child is too burdened with his assignments and refuses to pay heed to her? His performance is going down and he feels stressed out
Yes, this is a common problem. Most oftenly the children refuse to open up. We need to find the root cause of this symptom . It is a symptom, not the cause. So I don’t believe in quick tips. Go deeper into the matter and check if the child is deprived of love, attention, companionship or some comfortable space where he can share all that he is going through.
Q. According to Ameican psychological association , apart from academics, social pressure and peer pressure are very much responsible for depression in young people.
True. We are boosting their physical health. We give them expensive gadgets, gourmet meals, branded clothes but we fail to boost their emotional health . We fail to teach them how to deal with rejections and failures.
Q. What according to you are some alarming signals that notify parents about their child’s not so healthy mind ?
Body language speaks all. We , as parents , fail to initiate a healthy communication. We shouldn’t be reprimanding. Parents are poor at listening to their children. We need to catch their wavelengths, it is only then, when you listen to the music of love.
Q. The pandemic isn’t gone. Teenagers have lost their precious days at college. One parent asks where is she responsible for the monotony her child is going through ?
The pandemic was a major game changer. The most under rated pandemic warriors were the children. they were deprived of two major activities, by which they are identified as children, going to school or college and going to playground.
Q. Your message to the masses
I am very passionate about raising emotionally strong children. Make your children feel very loved , wanted and cared. Begin your day with a hug
